Morton's Bar Bites Menu
Ever since it opened, I've wanted to check out Morton's special "Bar Bites" menu that is served in its bar area. During its "Power Hour," the plates on the Bar Bites menu cost $5. The Power Hour (which is actually power hours, plural) is Monday through Friday between 4:30 PM and 6:30 PM and between 9:30 PM and 11:00 PM. Apparently, this is a pretty big draw or people are getting off work early these days with the recession, er, economic slowdown, because the first two times I tried to go around 5:00 PM there wasn't a seat to be had in the bar. This time, I showed up around 4:45 PM and was lucky there was a free seat.
During the Power Hour times, you can choose from a trio of miniature cheesburgers, four petite filet mignon sandwiches, chicken strips, blue cheese french fries, and jump lump crab with dip all for $5. We ordered the filet mignon sandwiches, and I can tell you they weren't as substantial as the picture on the web site. (Morton's used to serve the filet mignon sandwiches for free during Power Hour. Price was better back then. It was OK for $5. I'm not sure how much they cost the rest of the day.) The blue cheese fries were good and actually more filling than the sandwiches. The cheesburgers looked pretty good, and I definitely regretted not going with them instead of the filet mignon sandwiches. For directions and other info on the South Boston Seaport location, check out the Morton's web site.

wagamama
The weather was nice last Thursday, and we wanted to sit outside, so we gave wagamama a try. It wasn't too crowded, but most of the outside seats were filled up. The seats are similar to long picnic tables, so we were put across from each other at the end of one of the tables. Another couple was at the other end with two seats in between, which eventually got filled up. If you're looking for some privacy with your meal, this may not be the place for you.
Most of the items on the menu are noodle dishes, which include either soba (thin) noodles or udon (thick) noodles. I had the teriyaki steak soba, slices of steak over thin noodles. According to The Boston Globe, wagamama added this item to the menu for the Boston location, and I'm glad they did because it was excellent. As a side dish (don't call them appetizers, presumably because they come with the meal and not bef0re) the tori kara age (deep-fried chicken prepared with soy sauce) was really good, too. Beer choices were a blend of Boston and Japan, with Asahi (available in a 22 oz. bottle), Kirin, and Sam Adams.
The waitstaff places orders on a handheld computer so that it gets to the kitchen ASAP. The food is served quickly also. While the computers are high-tech, the waitstaff use a decidedly low-tech method— chalk on the table— to note the numbers that correspond to your orders, so that the food is delivered to the right location.
According to their web site, today is opening day for wagamama's Harvard Square location, so you may want to check them out there as well.

Salvatore's
Salvatore's was launched by the owners of Sal's Pizza, which has numerous locations in the Boston area. Pizza is definitely a staple on the menu at Salvatore's. There are 12-inch gourmet pizzas (I had the Italian lover with prosciutto, sweet capicola, and caramelized onion.) along with Sal's signature 19 inch, 3-pound pizzas. There are plenty of pasta dishes and entrees, such as veal or chicken parmesan, marsala, and saltimbocca. Most entrees are between $15 and $22.
We went on a Thursday night and had about a 20 minute wait, not too bad. Lunch has been busy since the restaurant opened, particularly since take-out is available. There is a bar with a couple flat-screen televisions. It's a good thing the screens are flat, since the space in Salvatore's is a little tight. At least the night we were there, we were seated next to a large party and there was barely any room for the waitstaff to squeeze by. And after having added to your waistline with a good Italian meal and a couple bottles of Peroni, you may need a little more room to squeeze by. Salvatore's is at 225 Northern Avenue.
